The excursion to Monte Corona starts from the door of Casa Rural Arce Pirineo at 769 meters above sea level and ends at 1,392 meters. It is a 7-kilometer hike suitable for all ages. From its hill, we can enjoy a unique view of the entire valley and the Pyrenees. Monte Corona divides the waters of the Irati River and its tributary, the Urrobi. At the foot of the mountain are the villages of Arrieta, Garralda, Oroz-Betelu, and Gorraiz. Of the four places, Arrieta is the most popular starting point as it offers a more comfortable route.
Descend to the town square from Casa Rural Arce Pirineo and ascend along a well-marked dirt road that starts from the school. After about a kilometer and a half, you will see a fountain on the right side of the road. After that, you will cross a stream and continue walking, following the signs. A little further on, you will climb back up to its origins, reaching the crest of the divide between the Irati River and the Urrobi River after 5.5 kilometers from Arrieta. Here, you leave the path (which continues to the Oroz-Betelu factory) and, turning left, ascend to the summit of the mountain with a steep climb. About a kilometer and a half from leaving the path behind, you reach the summit, which is a large plateau.
The trail can be done in a circular manner; our recommendation is to return along the same path you climbed. We also strongly recommend bringing binoculars to spot the queens of the skies, the birds. It is an excursion where you will spot vultures flying over the area, especially during the hunting season. Eagles, kites, and vultures are also abundant. In addition to wildlife, during the hike, you will see cattle (Pyrenean Blond) and horses (Burguete breed).
